If you are thinking about starting a business in Oman, one of the first questions is: can I live in Oman as the owner of the business? The short answer is yes. Every commercial registration holder gets a two-year residency. Registering your company does not only give you the right to operate; it also opens the way to legal residence in the country where you invest.
In this guide we explain what this residency means, how family sponsorship works, how renewal is handled, and the practical sequence of steps after you obtain your registration. The aim is to give you the full picture before you start, so you can plan your time and paperwork clearly.
What is residency through a commercial registration?
The commercial registration is the official document showing that your company or establishment is registered with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, and it is issued online through the Invest Easy platform. Once you hold a commercial registration, you are entitled to a two-year residency as the business owner.
The key difference is that you do not need another employer to sponsor you. Your own company is the basis of your residency, and you remain in control of your decisions. The residence card itself is issued by the Royal Oman Police, the authority responsible for visas and residency in Oman.
The practical sequence after registration
Details vary with the type of activity, your nationality and your current situation (inside or outside Oman), but the usual order of steps generally looks like this:
- Obtain the commercial registration through Invest Easy, choosing the right activity and legal form.
- Prepare the business premises and lease, and obtain the municipality licence or sector licence if your activity requires one.
- Apply for your entry visa and residency as the registration holder, through the channels approved by the Royal Oman Police.
- Complete the medical examination at an approved centre after arrival.
- Give fingerprints and receive your residence card from the Royal Oman Police.
- Open the company bank account; banks usually ask for the residence card among the documents.
- Apply for your family to join you once your residency is in place, if you wish.
Our advice is to treat these steps as one connected chain: a delay in one step, such as the lease or the licence, can delay everything after it. Prepare your documents in advance and check the current requirements with the official authority before each step.
Family sponsorship: the basics
Once you hold a residency, you can usually apply for your family members to join you, such as your spouse and children. This is done through the Royal Oman Police, which normally asks for documents such as:
- A copy of your passport and residence card.
- A marriage certificate for a spouse and birth certificates for children, attested as required.
- A suitable housing lease.
- Proof of income or financial means, according to the conditions in force at the time you apply.
Family-joining conditions, such as minimum income and the permitted age range for children, can change from time to time. That is why we do not quote specific figures here; check the Royal Oman Police website or ask them directly before you apply.
Renewing your residency
The residency lasts two years and is renewed before it expires through the Royal Oman Police. To keep renewal smooth, make sure of three things:
- Keep your commercial registration valid; your residency depends on it, and renewing the registration on time is central to keeping your status stable.
- Keep the company's other licences and obligations in order, such as the municipality licence and Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry membership where required.
- Start well before the expiry date, so you avoid late penalties or disruption to your transactions.
Questions investors often ask
Do I need an Omani partner to get the registration? Many activities allow full foreign ownership under the Foreign Capital Investment Law, with a list of excluded activities. Check your activity before you start.
Does the residency replace studying the project? No. Residency is a result of the investment decision, not a reason for it. Before you register your company, make sure the activity has real demand, the location fits, and you understand the competition. That is what protects your money and your time.
Residency comes with the registration, but a project's success comes from the right decision before you register.
